New Year’s Resolutions for your Kitchen and Bath

New Year’s Resolutions for your Kitchen and Bath

Your kitchen should really give up smoking, don’t you think?  And your bathroom could probably stand to lose some flab, I imagine; mine sure could!  Here are some New Year’s resolutions for your kitchen and bath, since you’re in a commitment frame of mind right now.

KITCHEN

I resolve to have a fire extinguisher on hand in or near my kitchen, and know how to use it, just in case.

I resolve to replace the incandescent bulbs in my kitchen with more energy-efficient models.

I resolve to choose WaterSense-rated faucets when I replace my existing ones.

I resolve to clear out pots, pans, utensils and accessories I don’t regularly use.  Those I use once or twice a year will find a new resting place outside my critical work zones.  Those I haven’t used in forever will get donated to charity.

I resolve to have good kitchen ventilation installed… And actually use it when I cook!

BATHROOM

I resolve to have good bathroom ventilation installed… And actually use it!

I resolve to replace the incandescent bulbs in my bathroom with more energy-efficient models.

I resolve to choose WaterSense-rated faucets when I replace my existing ones.

I resolve to de-clutter my bathroom… You will increase your storage and sense of well-being immensely if you do this.  (FYI, please dispose of expired prescriptions safely with a local agency; do NOT flush them down the food chain!)

I resolve to increase my safety — it is National Bath Safety Month, y’all — by adding stylish no-block grab bars and slip-resistant coating to any slick tile if I’m not planning a remodel,  and much more if I am.

  • I laughed at “your kitchen should really give up smoking.” You see, I finally decided to quit messing around with “spot cleaning” my oven and actually use its self-cleaning capability for the first time. Just last week (the stove is almost 6 years old!) I finally got tired of the smoke alarm going off every time I used the oven. Guess what? I can’t imagine why I waited so long!

    • Consider opening the drawers and doors of the adjacent base cabinets when you run the self-clean function next time. It will reduce the heat that can otherwise build up in them.
